IDEAL PRAYER ROOM

A room with the highest level of sanctity and purity is a Prayer room. It is a room to connect our inner consciousness with the eternal consciousness. It is a place where a divinistic relationship and bond between GOD and devotees are made. It is a perfect place to please the God and maintain an invisible, eternal and ever pervading connection between the two. Generally the link between God & devotee is not connected and that is why prayer room in residences does not actually serve the purpose. It serves as a mere formality. Such a formality does not provide any level of relaxation, comfort and contentment. Therefore it is necessary to attain the highest level of connectivity with the almighty and this is fairly possible with an inducive internal environment. A spiritual, holistic and pious internal environment will help in getting the desired results.

A prayer room is also used for introspect, self-relaxation and meditation. For such activities a feeling of focus and concentration need to be maintained. Ideally a prayer room should have an active, energetic and positive environment. It should be connected to the nature. It should be borne in mind that activity like praying which needs focus and concentration should not be merged with any other activity. It should always be preferred that praying area should be a separate area with no interference with any other activity and should be conducive to the main purpose that is PRAYING, INTROSPECTION AND MEDITATION.

MOOD OF THE ROOM:

Ideally the environment of the Prayer room should be full of concentration & connectivity, purity, holism, sanctity, energy and positive vibrations. The mood of the room should make the devotee feel relaxed and comfortable. The connection of the self with the divinity should be very gradual. In case, the room lacks the above mentioned traits, it is important to create them by using appropriate colour, design, aroma, placements & music etc.

PURITY, SANCTITY & POSITIVE VIBRATIONS MATTER A LOT IN A PRAYER ROOM

BASIC NEEDS:

  • Prayer room should be away from a place where foul smell, poor sight and heavy noises are heard frequently.
  • Prayer room must have a sound level of 55 decibels or less for highest levels of concentration.
  • Minimum light in a prayer room should be 200 lux.

  • A PRAYER ROOM SHOULD BE WELL LIT

  • Indoor air quality should be free from all organic and inorganic contaminants.
  • There should be large number of windows in the prayer room to allow maximum movement of air.
  • The room should be well connected with the nature.


LOCATION:

The prayer room should be located in the northeast of the building with openings towards east and north. A prayer room can also be created in the northeast east, northeast north and east of the building. If a prayer room is so placed, an environment full of concentration, connectivity, spirituality and positivity will automatically be created. It should be taken into consideration that the prayer room should not be below a staircase, opposite or below a toilet, inside a store or bedroom.




  • The pictures should be hung on a higher level than a normal for a wheelchair user.
  • Ventilate the room by opening the windows and doors in the morning. This would ventilate the room and would let the positive solar radiations enter into the room. This practice would give multifold benefits if the prayer room is located in the northeast or east of the building.
  • Keep the window slightly open at night, as it would help to air the room, thus reducing humidity and discouraging mold growth.
  • Use roller blinds or shades in preference to curtains or drapes.
  • Replace carpets with a hard surface flooring material or washable cotton rugs.
  • Keep shelves, windowsills, and worktops or counters clear and dust free by vacuuming or damp dusting regularly.
  • Keep prayer room clutter free or clutter less because it means cleanliness and sanctity.
  • Store books and prayer room related ornaments behind glass doors to prevent dust collection


  • A public temple has a wide flexibility of choosing colours. Golden yellow, orange and white are preferred.
  • A bright and eye catchy colour that can distract and disturb the focus and concentration of the devotee should not be used in a residential prayer room.
  • A simple, light, spiritual and easygoing colour should be used in the residential prayer room.
  • White off, white, pale yellow, light blue or purple can be used on the walls.
  • Ceiling of the prayer room should be white in colour. White colour on the ceiling reduces the temperature level and keeps it much below the average temperature level of the human body.
  • The flooring of the prayer room should be in a light and soothing colour.
  • There should be sufficient compact flour cent lights to provide ambient lighting for reading.
  • A picture light or track light should be placed above the idol to focus its beauty and charm.
  • Natural light should be more than 500 lux.
  • Too many lights with different colours should be avoided.
  • Raginigandha, marigold or rose can be used to decorate the prayer room.

  • Beautiful Rangoli can be created to decorate and add colours of life to the room. Rangoli can be created with grains, flour & rice. It can also be created through artificial colours.
  • The room should look full of life and should reflect cultural values and traditions.

  • Bells should be hung close to the windows and doors. Small bells that have a Indian traditional shape with light weight should be tied with a string to create desired bell designs. Such small bells can be collectively tied up to create shapes like OM, Swastik, Trident etc. One can customize and create bells of desired shape, size and design. One can also buy readymade bells from the market to create sound sensations in the prayer room. Wind chimes can also be used in the prayer room.

  • Musical bells can also be used in the prayer room, as it will add melody to the sound sensations.
  • Ideally the statue or painting of GOD should dominate the prayer room.

  • In case of missions, ashrams and groups avoiding idol worship may place pictures of holy signs, holy places and holy gurus.
  • Painting of a Diya (Indian traditional lamp) can also be placed in the prayer room to enhance concentration.


  • A picture of a cosmic spiral can also prove to be useful for meditation.

  • Too many shapes and colours should not be used.

  • Sandalwood can also be used as it creates a holistic and spiritualistic environment.
  • Sandalwood incense, aroma, candle or even essential oil can be used to aromatize the environment. The medium to aromatize would merely depend upon availability and recourses.

  • SANDALWOOD INCENSE STICKS

  • Sandalwood incenses are generally very popular in prayer rooms.
  • Lavender or jasmine can be used to break the monotonyof sandalwood or camphor.
  • The idol should be placed on a height of 3feet or 5feet.
  • If people sit and pray, a height of 3 is recommended and if they stand & worship than a height of 5 feet should be chosen. This would keep the position of GOD high above the eye level and in a blessing position.
  • In Prayer room GOD faces west & devotees should face east while worshiping.
  • In public temples, GOD faces east while devotees face west while worshipping.
  • Muslims may also prefer prayer room in northeast but can face west while praying.
  • There should not be a door at the back of the devotee while praying.
  • The door and window should be even in numbers if possible.
  • A door at the back of the devotee while praying distracts, disturbs and therefore should be avoided. Ideally there should be a solid wall at the back to enhance stability and concentration.
  • In case of paucity of space, if a hanging temple is hung on the wall, it should be noticed that the wall should have a holistic colour.
